Lamé, Gabriel
(1795-1870)
   mathematician, engineer
   Born in Tours, Gabriel Lamé, after having worked on feasibility projects in Russia with émile clapey-ron (1820), on his return to France (1832) took part in the establishment of the Paris-Saint-Germain and Paris-Versailles railroads. In mathematics, he contributed to the development of analytic geometry, introducing algebraic notation and multipliers (Examen des différentes méthodes pour résoudre les problèmes de géométrie, 1818). in analytical mechanics, he established general equations of the elasticity of characteristic elements and deformation of internal tensions. He also put forth an important differential equation that he discovered in a problem of propagating heat (Lamé Equation) and the introduction of homofocal quadrics as coordinating surfaces in geometry and in physical mathematics. Lamé was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1843.
